Pixar's RenderMan Toolkit

Pixar

Pixar's RenderMan is the Academy Award-winning software used by motionpicture and television studios to create realistic visual effects. Usedin conjunction with popular modeling and animation software, Pixar'sRenderMan has allowed digital design studios to create landmark visualeffects such as the water creature in The Abyss, the cyborg in Terminator2, and the dinosaurs in Jurassic Park.Pixar's RenderMan was engineered from the onset to create the world'smost compelling and highest quality computer-generated images for use infeature film and television effects. RenderMan images are free from thetypical computer defects of aliasing, strobing, and unrealistic visualsimplicity. Instead, RenderMan images are capable of representing richand subtle visual attributes such as materials and textures, theinfluence of various types of lights from multiple sources, shadows, camera effects, and other features not properly described by shape alone.RenderMan's powerful shading language and anti-aliased motion blur allowdesigners to believably integrate stunning synthetic effects with live-action footage. In addition, RenderMan is backed by a professionaltechnical staff who know the challenges of creating digital effects. The shading language is one of the most valuable benefits of RenderMan.It is programmable and extensible, and allows technical directors tocreate any surface appearance they can imagine. The procedural nature ofthe shading language frees it from the resolution and projectiondifficulties encountered in traditional texture-mapping, and allowsdesigners to create realistic effects which could not be duplicatedphotographically. In order to smoothly integrate special effects into film, computer-synthesized frames must accurately simulate the behavior of cameras.RenderMan's motion blur and depth-of-field, which employ a patentedtechnique for anti-aliasing, can smoothly blur synthetic images to thatthey realistically simulate images which have been traditionally filmed.Pixar's RenderMan Toolkit includes:data in the RenderMan interface Bytestream format (RIB) and generatingrendered images.procedural textures, natural effects and motion blur.users to add RIB output or the whole renderer to their program.Interface Specification and The RenderMan Companion: A Programmer`sGuide to Realistic Computer Graphics, published by Addison-Wesley.
